![]() ![]() As Geryon spends more time with Herakles, he becomes rebellious and drifts further apart from his mother, eventually fleeing to Hades, Herakles’s hometown. ![]() ![]() When Geryon is 14, he meets an older, confident, and carefree boy named Herakles, and they become inseparable, eventually developing a sexual relationship. The abuse prompts Geryon to retreat inward, hiding his “inside” life from the “outside” world and inspiring him to create an autobiography, which ultimately takes the form of a photographic essay. Although Geryon is initially close with Geryon’s mother, she fails to protect him from his older brother’s sexual abuse. Longing to fit in with the ordinary humans he lives among, Geryon avoids flying and hides his wings. Geryon is a shy, introspective boy who is ashamed of his monstrosity. The Geryon of the novel is a red- winged monster who lives on an island called “the Red Place,” located somewhere in the Atlantic. The protagonist, Geryon, is based on the monster Herakles slew in Greek mythology. ![]()

We never get that moment so common in apocalyptic tales when humans confront what is hunting them. When explosions are heard coming from Ringrock and mysterious agents show up looking for someone, or something, Katie and Libby must join forces to survive.Įventually we get very detailed explanations for the events on Ringrock, in the form of Libby's father's scientific journal, but since the novel never takes us there, it all feels even more detached and supernatural than it is. ![]() ![]() On a neighboring island lives 14-year-old Libby, whose mom and dad work as scientists on Ringrock and treat her more like a boarder than a daughter. In life, Sawyer was a troubled teen who shot and killed six kids at a local high school before taking his own life. Though most ghosts are harmless and Jake is always happy to help them move on to the next place, Sawyer Doon wants much more from Jake. Unfortunately, life as a medium is getting worse. Clair start looking up with the arrival of another Black student-the handsome Allister-and for the first time, romance is on the horizon for Jake. Both are a living nightmare he wishes he could wake up from. But he can’t decide what’s worse: being a medium forced to watch the dead play out their last moments on a loop or being at the mercy of racist teachers as one of the few Black students at St. Sixteen-year-old Jake Livingston sees dead people everywhere. A few years ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Ryan Douglass and a few other authors in a roundtable entitled “ Where is the Queer Black Male Voice in YA?” The interviewees were all obvious rising stars, in my opinion, but the very next queer Black male voice to rise up in YA after that post actually belonged to an author I didn’t know yet named Julian Winters.įast forward to now, when Douglass has debuted on the New York Times bestseller list (and also managed to publish a volume of poetry called Boy in Jeopardy even before that), Winters is three books in with a fourth, Right Where I Left You, on the way, and both of them are here today to talk about The Taking of Jake Livingston. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I got choked up, laughed, was awed, and stunned by these stories There were only a few chapters that didn't really interest me, some that were interesting, but I felt the lesson wasn't one that applied to my life, and then the majority of the chapters were extremely intriguing. Review: I liked that Maya Angelou did the reading of her own book and listened to this book on CD as I drove to and from work, which meant that I got 2 to 3 chapters each way. Summary (from her website): Dedicated to the daughter she never had but sees all around her, Letter to My Daughter reveals Maya Angelou's path to living well and living a life with meaning.Told in her own inimitable style, this book transcends genres and categories.
